Employers Must Invest More in Traffic Safety

It’s not fall accidents or electrical injury hazards that Boston employers must worry about the most.  Automobile accidents are the number one cause of occupational fatalities in the United States.  In fact, the most dangerous time for many employees is the time that they spend traveling in a vehicle.  Employers could be doing a lot more to inculcate safe driving practices among their employees. According to statistics a typical motorist in the United States travels approximately to 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year.  He has a risk weight of being involved in an accident that is about one in 15 annually.  Commercial drivers drive many more miles, and therefore, have a much higher risk of being involved in an accident.

Approximately 14 % of all vehicle travel in the United States is believed to be on work-related business, while about 27% of all travel is believed to involve employees traveling on their way to and from work. The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety is a group that encourages employers to establish and implement safe driving practices in the workplace.  The group helps companies that want to phase in a safe driving policy in the workplace, and offers plenty of resources on their website. There’s more than just employee health and safety at stake for employers.  More and more accident victims are now coming forward to file lawsuits, not just against the at-fault motorist in the accident, but also the employer of the at-fault motorist if the motorist was traveling in a company-issued car, or was traveling on work or business. Therefore, it makes sense for organizations to invest in driver safety programs that encourage employees to stay safe when they’re on the road.
